Scout Mountain 100 Training Log Week 2/20

Lisa in the middle of our bushwhack from the Baldy Ridge to the Foothills Trail

A little late but better than never! I really felt like I didn’t have time to do anything I normally like to do this week. Squeezing in training was hard enough.

Thursday

Very Easy Run/Hike with Twig -6.55 miles and 620 feet of Vert

Notes: I walked a lot. It was extremely icy and I was feeling very sore. Usually it would have been a rest day but I needed to get Twig outside and I wanted to do something sort of adventurish because it was over 50 degrees! So I scoped out conditions for backpacking to a cabin this weekend. The good news is I think I’ve overcome the sickness relatively fast.

Friday

Long Run: 16.5 miles and 4,000 feet of Vert

Notes: Included some bushwhacking. Failed to hydrate and fuel well again. Came home and peed dark yellow and felt nauseous. Legs felt absolutely fried but I PRed a lot of steep climbing bits! Lisa is a very strong runner. Great to share miles with someone training for the same thing!

Saturday

Storm Castle Hike with Friends – 7.8 miles and 2,100 feet of vert

Notes: We did do some jogging downhill so I counted this as a trail run

Sunday

Backpacking in to Mystic Lake Cabin: 10.4 miles and 1,222ft of vert

Notes: On mud and ice sheets with a very heavy pack approx 40lbs because I was carrying heavy stuff for Twig and 4.5 liters of water

Overview: After a strong start to my training block with week 1, week 2 started with me feeling sick and missing a workout but luckily by the end I was feeling a lot better already. I also started a new bartending job this week that had me at work until 11pm so making the sleep adjustment was hard as well. I felt like I didn’t have much time for anything this week and I was constantly running out of time to get anything done that I had planned. I like being busy but it’s hard to always feel like I’m running out of time. I cut my lift short by a set on Wednesday just so I would have enough time to make dinner before work. I also like to spend a lot of time with Twig and give her the best life that I can so it is important to me that I spend a minimum of an hour getting outside with her everyday. A couple of days we just did the M which is 30 minutes but I felt like it was kicking her butt. She also seems to be entering her teenage era as she was constantly driving me crazy at home this week and I left the house to go get work done on my computer at a coffee shop two different times just so I could have some peace and quiet. I really have no idea how people have children LOL. I’m sure having someone else to raise them with helps. This month also started the “Forward is a pace” challenge at the local running store and they are doing weekly giveaways for people who post about it and meet their goals. I set a lofty goal of 200 miles which means I have to do 50 mile weeks. I think I only ran 200 miles in a month one other time and it was right before my peak training last year when I got injured. I think this is going to be really challenging but I’m also focusing on keeping my efforts easy such as when I went for a hike and run with Twig. I expect to be clocking a lot of easy miles like that just to hit my goal but we will see. I could crank out a healthy effort at RUFA. I failed to fuel and particularly hydrate on my long run once again feeling nauseous and peeing dark yellow when I got home. I definitely need to focus more on hydration next week. By the end of the week my legs just felt like lead and I really struggled on the Storm Castle hike and the backpacking trip. I had company come on Friday which was awesome but definitely distracting from my usual health routines. I stayed up way later than usual and didn’t get much sleep at all over the weekend.
